1 Derivatives

  The derivative of f(x)f(x) with respect to x is the function f′(x)f′(x) and is defined as,f′(x)=limh→0f(x+h)−f(x)h.

Derivatives are also used to calculate the rate of heat flow in geology.

2 Standard Deviation

  The standard deviation is a numerical value used to indicate how widely individuals in a group vary. 

If individual observations vary greatly from the group mean, the standard deviation is big; and vice versa.

3 Defense Mechanism

  Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies that are unconsciously used to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings. 

We use defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from feelings of anxiety or guilt, which arise because we feel threatened, or because our id or superego becomes too demanding.

Distress is damaging, excessive or pathogenic (disease producing) stress.

A polyatomic ion is an ion composed of two or more atoms. 

The hydroxide cation (OH^–) and the phosphate cation (PO₄^3-) are both polyatomic ions.
